North of England Children’s Cancer Research

An ethos of giving is central to life at NHSG. Girls are encouraged and supported to hold an outward-looking life view and donate their time generously in helping others.

After a whole School vote, the girls selected North of England Children’s Cancer Research (NECCR) as the 2017-2018 Whole School Charity.  At NHSG, girls select one charity per year on which to focus their fundraising activites, allowing them to raise a meaningful contribution over the course of the year. NECCR is a North East based charity which leads pioneering research into children’s cancer.

After an initial September bake sale to get us started, there have been a flurry of events enthusiastically supported by girls and the wider school community. These have included a Charity Fashion Show organised entirely by Sixth Formers; stalls at our Christmas Fair selling second hand uniform, handmade stocking fillers and festive snacks and activities and last week’s Pyjama Day when girls (and a few staff!) made a donation to come to School dressed in their pyjamas. Pyjama Day was followed by an evening Slumber Party, a very popular event attended by girls from Year 5 to Sixth Form, and Christmas Jumper Day.

We were then delighted to learn that our Year 6 won the annual GDST Junior School Christmas Card Competition, bagging a prize of £500 to the charity of their choice – NECCR.
