Following the highly successful inaugural GDST Young Musician and Young Vocalist of the Year at Birkenhead High School Academy (BHSA) in February 2014, Wimbledon High School is delighted to be hosting the 2016 competition, open to pupils from all Senior Schools in the GDST Network.
Aimed at celebrating the talents of the budding musicians in the Trust’s 23 senior schools and two Academies, each one has been invited to enter one instrumentalist and one singer between the ages of 11 to 18. Heats are being held at Trinity United Reformed Church, Wimbledon, during the day on Tuesday 9th and Wednesday 10th February, with 6 finalists being selected to perform solo recitals at the magnificent St John’s Smith Square, London. Angela Lochmuller, who will be representing Newcastle High School for Girls, will be playing the violin.
The final competition will also feature a world-premiere of a newly-composed piece of music, written by Grace-Evangeline Mason. Grace won the prestigious BBC Young Composer of the Year 2013 and has subsequently had her music played as part of the BBC Proms and we are delighted to have the support of such a young and promising female composer for the competition.
WHS are also delighted to be able to welcome four exceptional adjudicators to comment and judge on the performances including Ruth Byrchmore, Jane Salmon, Peter Hill and Hilary Davan Wetton. Their significant collective experience in the world of professional music will promise each of the competitors a wonderful musical experience.
We wish all the contestants and Angela the best of luck.
