With a line-up of top grades, Jessica Hunter has won a place at Durham University to read English.  She gained A* A A B grades in Classical Civilisation, Creative Writing, English Language and Fine Art A Levels.

As Results Day approached Jessica’s initial confidence in her examinations began to wane, so when she eventually came into school to collect her results she found a quiet spot in the School locker room to open the envelope while her Dad waited anxiously in the car.

“I thought I had done well in my examinations but as Results Day drew nearer I began to get more nervous and couldn’t think about anything else.  When I opened my results, I revealed each result line by line. The A*, which I needed for Durham, was the last. I made it much harder for myself so wouldn’t recommend that approach to opening your results!”

A quick text to Dad (still in the car) with the news of her success soon saw her family celebrating too – especially as Jessica is the only one of three sisters to go to university.

“They are all really pleased for me – they have been telling everyone they know that I am going to Durham!”

“From being quite small I actually wanted to be a Physicist, but by the end of Year 12 I was enjoying English a lot more – so my plans changed.  I can’t really explain my change of mind other than to say I just loved everything about my English and Creative Writing A Level courses, from the way they were taught to the content.

“I went on to choose Durham because the English course is fantastic and the city is so beautiful.  I think the size and distance from home is perfect,” said Jessica

Jessica hopes to take a Masters at Durham after completing her degree – her long term ambition is to become an English Professor where she can be engaged in both research and teaching.
