We are very sorry to report the death of former Headmistress of Central Newcastle High School, Miss Catherine Russell, on Sunday 1st February 2015.  She was 90 years old.

Miss Russell was Headmistress from 1962 to 1984. During her leadership, she oversaw the building of new Junior and Senior School Halls at West Avenue and Eskdale Terrace as well as the purchase of a large Terraced House for the Sixth Form, Eslington Tower.

Miss Russell’s subject was French and she had a great love of France.  She enjoyed travelling and had an insatiable appetite for learning about other countries and cultures which she shared with the girls.

She made a significant contribution to our School and will be remembered with fondness and respect by all staff and pupils.

We would like to pass on our sincere condolences to Miss Russell’s family and friends.

Miss Russell’s funeral will take place at 10.00 a.m. on Tuesday 17th February at St Charles RC Church, Church Road, Gosforth, Newcastle upon Tyne.
