Year 1 have been working on their Mathematics objective, ‘to read and write numbers from one to twenty in numerals and words.’

We know the girls engage better when counting in meaningful situations so we explored the beautiful autumnal grounds of Chapman House to find natural objects to represent numbers one to twenty. Collecting in the autumn sunshine was so much fun!

The objects counted varied in size, colour and position. Using these concrete resources helped to deepen the girls’ understanding of counting, ensuring future mathematical learning is built on solid foundations.

Once collected, the girls then organised their natural objects into a number line, labelling the numbers represented in numerals and words.

The girls benefited from the enrichment and deepening of content in this activity and because their work was so beautiful, we made it into a classroom number line which they can now refer to during their future work.
