The Girls’ Day School Trust has celebrated a significant milestone in the expansion of Newcastle High School for Girls at Tankerville Terrace where main contractor, Wates Construction, has reached the upper most point of the brand new building.
To mark the occasion, Wates Construction hosted an official ‘topping out’ ceremony, inviting girls and staff to write messages for their new school on the final beam of the building’s steel frame before it was installed.
Now into its fifth month, the £11m project includes Wates’ refurbishment of the school’s iconic Victorian buildings alongside construction of a new 3,625 sq m three-storey block.
Designed by architects, Ellis Williams, the new extension will comprise a multi-purpose assembly hall and performing arts venue, dining room, fitness suite, state-of-the-art science laboratories and additional classroom spaces.
The milestone marks the midway point of the development and has seen Wates Construction install 188 of steel on site. Completion of the project is scheduled for summer 2016.
Commenting on the occasion, Christine Sillis, Director of Estates at the GDST, said:
“Newcastle High School for Girls will continue the proud tradition of the GDST and girls’ only education in the North East. The new development will provide an outstanding learning environment and we are delighted to see the building taking shape.”
Hilary French, Headmistress at Newcastle High School for Girls, added: “This was a significant moment for our school community. The date draws ever closer for our move to what will be the finest school facilities in the region.”
Paul Dodsworth, Business Unit Director for Wates Construction North East and Yorkshire, commented: “Our team at Newcastle High School for Girls has made excellent progress on site and celebration of the project’s midway point is a fitting opportunity to recognise what is being achieved through our partnership working with the school.
”Every education project calls for a unique approach to accommodate individual curriculum requirements. Wates is a proficient contractor in understanding and delivering on these needs whilst causing minimal disruption to the live school environment.”
