Newcastle High School for Girls (NHSG) has been named a finalist in the prestigious Independent Schools of the Year Awards 2026, proudly representing the North East as the only school in the region to be shortlisted in the highly competitive Independent Schools of the Year: North category.
The award recognises outstanding schools across a geographical area stretching from Merseyside and the Humber to the North of Scotland. NHSG is one of just six schools selected as finalists, highlighting the School’s exceptional educational offering and the importance it places on its North East roots.
The Independent Schools of the Year Awards are among the most respected accolades in the education sector, celebrating excellence, innovation and pupil achievement. They provide a powerful opportunity to showcase the transformative experiences offered by independent schools and to demonstrate the enduring value of independent education.
The Independent Schools of the Year: North category specifically celebrates schools that offer a genuinely distinctive educational experience, shaped by the character, heritage and opportunities of the North. Judges look for schools that stand out within their region through their commitment to excellence, the impact for pupils and the wider community.
Commenting on the achievement, Amanda Hardie, Head at NHSG, said:
“We are absolutely delighted to be recognised as a finalist in the Independent Schools of the Year Awards. To be the only finalist from the North East shortlisted in this category is a tremendous honour and a testament to the dedication of our staff and the exciting opportunities we are able to create for pupils, shaped by the pride we hold in our region’s heritage.
“At Newcastle High School for Girls, we are committed to providing an exceptional girls first educational experience that empowers every girl to thrive academically and personally. This recognition reflects the distinctive opportunities we offer and the values that underpin everything we do.”
The shortlisting reinforces NHSG’s reputation as one of the leading independent schools in the region, recognised for its commitment to academic excellence, pupil wellbeing, and to preparing girls to be the leaders and trailblazers of the future.
As the School celebrates this significant achievement, it continues to champion the strengths and potential of the North East, proudly flying the flag for the region on the national stage.
