There was plenty to celebrate at this year’s Celebration of Achievement on 5th July, where girls presented a snapshot of their accomplishments of 2018/19 to an audience of family and friends at Senior School. The variation of activities described by girls in Years 7 to 10 was outstanding and an array of multi-media formats was used to showcase their achievements.
Highlights included a poignant animated film by Year 8 pupils on overcoming negative body image, dance performances by Years 8 and 9, a recital of Caitlin Pyper’s winning entry of the Foyle Young Poet Award and a song performed using only the hand signage programme, Makaton.
We also listened to a selection of impressive entries for our annual International Women’s Day competition, including a poem on Claudette Colvin and winning film on Constance Lytton by Connie Hayward, for which she had also composed the soundtrack.
Girls who participated respectively in the Tenner, Faraday and Formula 1 Challenges talked about their experiences and all they had learnt from taking part in these engineering and enterprise activities.
Of course, Celebration of Achievement wouldn’t be complete without the announcement of our 2020 School Musical, which will take place in NHSG Senior School’s very own high-spec Hall. The ‘trailer’, which playfully began with some rather dated footage of Pirates of Penzance, was initially met with radio silence, but was quickly followed by gasps of relief and excitement as the film cut to iconic scenes of cult classic, Grease! It’s safe to say that the girls were delighted by this choice of Musical which is set in 1959 at fictional Rydell High School and follows ten teenagers as they navigate the complexities of peer pressure, politics, personal core values, and love.
We rounded off the celebrations at Senior School with refreshments and
ice-creams in the Hall before girls and their families departed to begin their long-awaited Summer holiday. We hope everyone has a lovely break filled with plenty of rest and sunshine. See you all in September!
