Educating for a Greener Future

At Newcastle High School for Girls, sustainability is embedded into our ethos of mutual respect, responsibility, and innovation. We strive to empower our pupils to become future leaders and changemakers, shaping a world that is socially, economically, and environmentally sustainable.

We are committed to taking meaningful action against the climate crisis—through education, innovation, and community-led initiatives—working in line with the GDST’s We Are One sustainability strategy.

Here at NHSG, we believe we all have a responsibility to act now. Staff and pupils are working together to reduce our environmental impact and create a culture of sustainability across our four sites in Newcastle.

What We’ve Achieved So Far

Wild Spaces and Biodiversity

  • Increased the area of wild green spaces on our school grounds
  • Improved the biodiversity of our school pond
  • Completion of the Queen’s Canopy Award

Tackling Food Waste at Junior School

We introduced a giant wormery—Worms at Work—to compost food waste from lunches and snacks. Pupils now place leftovers into “worm-food” bins, creating compost that we use for school landscaping and gardens. This hands-on project links environmental awareness with everyday actions and has inspired real enthusiasm across the school community.

Taking Part in We Are One

In June 2023, our Year 6 pupils joined others from GDST schools at Wimbledon High School to take part in the We Are One event. This powerful day of workshops and outdoor learning celebrated our shared commitment to sustainability and gave pupils the opportunity to reflect on their hopes for a greener future.

  • Bronze EduCCate Global Sustainability and Climate Award
  • New waste disposal system introduced across the school
  • Eco-Schools England Green Flag Award

Looking Ahead

Our dedicated Sustainability Team has ambitious plans for 2025/26 and beyond. From eco-friendly infrastructure to curriculum developments and community outreach, we are determined to keep growing our impact.
