January’s new topic in Year 1 was based around the superb Katie Morag books, written by Mairi Hedderwick. The stories follow Katie Morag on her many adventures around the fictional Scottish Isle of Struay. The topic lends itself beautifully to learning new Geography and mapping skills.
Year 1 learnt the theory behind classifying features into physical and human. They correctly sorted places such as rivers, mountains and forests into the physical category and bridges, houses and
roads into the human category. In pairs, the girls then created a key and highlighted the different features on maps of the Isle of Struay. They worked collaboratively with their partners and discussed their decisions carefully.
We then took our learning outside into the grounds of Chapman House where we looked for examples of the two different features. The girls certainly enjoyed taking the clipboards outside and being ‘real geographers’!
